:-( Stupid Netgear doc writers, no biscuit for you. Came across it in one of the pictures from the management program's docs. I'd call this -½ egg for annoyance and having to troll through the docs to find the 192.168.* address it sets itself up on. Only 5 ports, but that was sufficient, just, for what I needed.Ĭons: Docs don't admit that you don't have to use the setup/management program that only runs on some half-baked OS that I don't use here. Pros: Inexpensive on sale really inexpensive if rebate comes through. Mirroring with a 1 Gigabit switch doesn't slow down network performance like my now ancient 10Mbit Ethernet hub (was not a switch, so always sends traffic to all ports). I successfully used the port mirroring feature to monitor traffic between a device/computer and the rest of the network by mirroring the traffic from ports 1-4 to port 5 and attaching a Linux box running WireShark to port 5. Overall Review: This unit has amazing feature set for the price. This is actually a third-party utility from Flexera Software, which is reputable company and supplies such ID and Config utilities for several vendors. By now, any software requiring admin rights should always be signed.
exe requiring admin rights to install (Windows will report publisher "Unknown"). Great little switch to add to your home/office LAN toolkit.Ĭons: The ProSafe Plus Utility is the legacy method to find this device on your network and setup, but is only for Windows and is only available as unsigned. You can use a LAN scanner or your router's DHCP client list to find the assigned IP address and manage instantly from any browser without installing any software. Unit shipped with this latest firmware, DHCP client mode on, and with the Web GUI feature enabled.
Netgear has not update their datasheet for GS105Ev2, but the recent Firmware (1.3.x) now includes a web GUI and thus no longer requires using a Windows program (ProSafe Plus Utility) to setup and manage, see release notes for confirmation. This is a sturdy Gbit Ethernet switch that includes basic managed switch features such as VLAN tagging, rate limiting, and port mirroring. Pros: new Web GUI and great features for the price.
